Whitechapel, located in East London, is set to become the future administrative center of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Situated in the East End, it is positioned 3.4 miles (5.5 km) east of Charing Cross. Originally part of Middlesex County, the area became a separate civil and ecclesiastical parish in the 14th century after separating from the ancient parish of Stepney. It joined the County of London in 1889 and later became part of Greater London in 1965. It served as the hub of the London Jewish community during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Notably, Whitechapel and the adjacent Spitalfields were the infamous locations of the 11 Whitechapel murders (1888-1891), some of which were attributed to the unidentified serial killer known as Jack the Ripper. In the latter half of the 20th century, Whitechapel emerged as a significant settlement for the British Bangladeshi community and is home to the Royal London Hospital and East London Mosque.
