In the past, Kirkliston was a part of West Lothian County, but it currently falls under the jurisdiction of the City of Edinburgh council. The town is situated on elevated terrain just north of a bend in the Almond River, along the former route that connected Edinburgh and Linlithgow. Locally, Kirkliston is commonly referred to as "Cheesetown," a name that was first recorded in 1902. While one theory suggests that the name originated from a verse by Burns, the widely accepted explanation is that workers who were involved in constructing the Forth Bridge and resided in Kirkliston frequently had cheese sandwiches for lunch.
