Malmesbury is a town in Wiltshire, England. It is situated approximately 14 miles (23 km) west of Swindon, 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Bristol and 9 miles (14 km) north of Chippenham. The town's older section is located on a hilltop, which is almost entirely encircled by the upper waters of the Bristol Avon and one of its tributaries. Originally an Iron Age fort, Malmesbury later became home to Malmesbury Abbey during the early medieval period; this monastery was renowned for its learning and later served as one of Alfred the Great's fortified burhs intended to defend against Viking attacks. Æthelstan, England's first king who died in 939 AD was buried in Malmesbury Abbey after his death. During the Middle Ages Malmesbury became prominent as a centre for learning with much focus being placed on and around the abbey.
