Canonbury is a residential area located in the London Borough of Islington, in North London. It is situated between Essex Road, Upper Street, Cross Street, and either side of St Paul's Road. The origins of Canonbury can be traced back to 1253 when the land in the area was granted to the Canons of St Bartholomew's Priory, Smithfield. It was subsequently named Canonbury. For much of its early history, the area remained predominantly open land until it was developed as a suburb in the early 19th century. Like many inner London areas, Canonbury faced a period of decline when the construction of railways in the 1860s made commuting from further distances into the city more accessible. However, from the 1950s onwards, the area underwent gentrification, including the construction of new developments to replace war-damaged properties in Canonbury Park North and South. Additionally, efforts were made to restore older buildings, contributing to the revitalization of the neighborhood.
