In the past, Kirkliston was a part of West Lothian County, but currently, it falls within the jurisdiction of the City of Edinburgh council. Situated on elevated terrain just north of a bend in the Almond River, Kirkliston lies on the former route that connected Edinburgh and Linlithgow. Locally, the town is often referred to as "Cheesetown," a name that was first recorded in 1902. While one theory suggests that this name originated from a verse by Burns, the most widely accepted explanation is that workers who were involved in the construction of the Forth Bridge and resided in Kirkliston frequently had cheese sandwiches for lunch. Furthermore, the town is also commonly known as "Kirky."
